Prayer Flag

This is a prayer flag on painted canvas I created for a "Prayer Flag Swap" It's 5" x8" with a 2" flap folded over. I made an origami crane, and attached it on cord , which is attached to the main cord for hanging. It has little beads on top and bottom of crane. There's a dragon fly on upper left(hard to see), and a 'wish' on upper right (hard to see as well) There's 6 little sashi mirrors . (You can see colors reflection in them. It's neat to see when the flag moves in the wind. Three flowers and 3 little creatures. The cord is sari silk ribbon wrapped around with a fancier ribbon to give more room for the crane to dance in the wind;-) When the wind blows "'Love and Compassion " is sent to all. I really enjoyed creating this.

I love Farmer's Markets!

Most of our Farmer's Market will be closing soon for the summer. Most will close in mid october;but we do have a Winter Market at one location in Vancouver. I feel the wave of the future is in community gardening and Farmers Market. This is a good thing as it teaches us how to grow our own food and know what kind of food we put on our table. Most of the food from the market's I've been to are either grown organically or without chemical sprays. Here are a few photos from my last weekend trip to the market. Digital textures done in Photoshop Elements. Textures from Kim Klassen>

29 Faces starts September 1st

The month of september has arrived, and here in Vancouver the cool air is felt in the early morning, and evening. We've been blessed with beautiful weather, and on average September is lovely here. Ayala Art has started another lovely month with 29 Faces. I will post some of my work here. ```` I took the full plunge last nite , and did this portrait of my nice Abbey. I saw her this summer, while I was travelling to New Brunswick. The last time I saw here was 6 years ago. She's grown up into a lovely girl with a kind and sweet disposition. The reference photo is posted with my attempt to bring out her beautiful spirit. DAY 6: Abbey @ Beresford Beach (reference photo)
Abbey @ Beresford Beach (my version)
DAY 8: This time it was an angel on 6" x 12" baltic birchwood. Angels come in my life often. I love creating them. They bring so much love and compassion! On my wooden panel I created a background of ephemeras, then gessoed creating wonderful textures.
DAY 8: This is my second painting for today;-) "Silence" is on 6" x 12" baltic birchwood For this painting mostly pinks, blues and purples were used to create a meditative and serene mood.
DAY 23:  Skipped many days. I'm preparing for a show so I have been very busy. Did this little sunday sketch @ my favorite cafe today, after I dropped off my artwork @ Beansprouts for the Drift Event in Vancouver from Sept. 28-30th http://www.thedrift.ca/about. I wanted to create a dreamy mood with textures. ~ Inspired by the book The Dovekeeper by Alice Hoffman, which I'm reading right now.Textures courtesy from Kimmie Draper, and a free Paris Background texture.

A new journal entry!
I came across a bird called pink breasted grosbeak, after flipping thru Animal Speak, which is about animal totem. Sometimes you come across different animals, which you are attracted to. I've been attracted to the owl, and also love this bird. The interesting thing about this bird is the marking on his chest ,which resembles a heart shape. One of his characteristic his teaching us to heal wounds for mental and emotional harmony. She helps to recognize your own inner voice and power.

Acrylics,fiber paste,glass beads medium
on 140 lbs. Arches hot press paper
I've been in an owl frenzy, since taking Juliette Crane's class in Lifebook.
Here's another little whimsy owl, with a poem excerpt from
Mary Oliver "White Owl". The poem is beautiful. To read it in full visit this link http://www.panhala.net/Archive/White_Owl_Flies.html Misty Mawn referred to her in class. I took a small part from the poem , which I felt went nicely with this painting.
Done on 140 lbs. Arches watercolor paper in acrylics, fiber paste for body and wings, and glass beads medium for feathers. Homemade flower stamp on printing paper, and glued on watercolor paper with matte medium
Excerpt reads:
" Coming down out of the freezing sky
with its depths of light
like an angel, or a Buddha with wings"
